Aichi Nagoya to Host Asian Games 2026

The Asian Games is a multi-sport event that brings together athletes from across the continent. It is held every four years and offers an opportunity to further strengthen international exchange in Asia.

The 2026 edition will be hosted in the Aichi-Nagoya prefecture of Japan from 19 September to 4 October. The event will showcase the heart of Japan and the spirit of the nation with a variety of sports and events.

A new selection policy for the Asian Games has been announced, making it clear that only athletes who have a real chance of winning medals will be considered. The ministry said it will only consider an athlete’s nomination if they rank in the top six for individual sports and top eight for team events at the last Asian Games, or match or better their sixth-place performance at a competition recognised by the relevant sport’s international federation held within 12 months of the Asian Games. It also bars the inclusion of additional sportspersons, coaches and support staff, even if they are willing to bear their own expenses.

Aichi-Nagoya has a well-developed transport network with JR lines (Tokaido Shinkansen, Tokaido Main Line, Chuo Main Line and more), Kintetsu Railway and Meitetsu Rail as well as the Nagoya Municipal Subway system, all offering fast and comfortable services. Additionally, a range of private and public bus companies operate throughout the city. Shuttle buses are also planned to aid spectator movement between competition venues.
